Nitrogen Generator Technology

The production of nitrogen using an INMATEC nitrogen generator can be realised with two technologies. Both technologies separate the nitrogen molecules from the oxygen molecules in the ambient air.

 

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Nitrogen Generation

Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) uses the principle of selective adsorption to produce high-purity nitrogen on-site. In this process, clean, compressed air is fed alternately into two vessels packed with carbon molecular sieves. Ambient air—comprising roughly 21 % oxygen, 78 % nitrogen, and 0.04 % carbon dioxide—passes through the sieves, which trap oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules while allowing nitrogen to pass through into the product storage tank.

The result is ultra-dry nitrogen, with flow rates ranging from 0.50 to 10,000 m³ per hour. PSA systems can consistently deliver nitrogen at purities up to 6.0 (99.9999 % nitrogen, just 1 ppm residual oxygen), making them ideal for applications in food packaging, electronics manufacturing, laboratory use, and more.

Membrane Technology Nitrogen Generation

Membrane-based nitrogen generators at INMATEC utilize hollow-fibre membranes to separate nitrogen from air. Compressed ambient air is driven through these fine fibres, where gases diffuse at rates determined by their molecular characteristics—water vapor, oxygen, noble gases, and carbon dioxide permeate the membrane more quickly, while nitrogen passes through more slowly into the product line. By adjusting operating pressure and feed air quality, the system achieves the desired nitrogen purity.

INMATEC’s membrane solutions deliver between 0.14 Nm³/h and 10,000 Nm³/h of nitrogen, with achievable purities up to 2.5 (99.5% nitrogen with 5,000 ppm residual oxygen), making them ideal for a wide range of industrial applications.
